July 2015 -  “Once upon a time” is a magical phrase.  Why?  Because a story is about to unfold…

This summer, in Mauritius, Zanzibar, Tunis and the Maldives, The Residence by Cenizaro properties are launching new “once upon a time” storytelling experiences for guests.  Embracing local culture, history and tradition is key to The Residence by Cenizaro brand and these new immersive storytelling experiences are designed to enable guests to feel even more connected to the destination.

The Residence Zanzibar – Best for Historical Tales

Lying on Africa’s east coast, Zanzibar - or Spice Island as it is also known – is bursting with culture and a history that is still evident in its intoxicating mix cultures - Swahili, Omani, British and Indian.  The Residence Zanzibar’s 80-acre estate, right on a kilometre stretch of stunning coastline is the perfect backdrop for storytelling.  Large floor cushions, a cup of traditional Zanzibar coffee in hand, the warm evening breeze of the Indian Ocean and stunning views…

The Residence Zanzibar Storyteller

An island local, Mr. Farid has a real flair for storytelling, regaling tales and personal stories, many of which are from his childhood.  Farid also incorporates senses through paintings, artefacts and incense and will be telling stories about – amongst other things - the ancient dhow fleets.  Intrinsic to the old Zanzibar, the dhows used to transport spices and precious goods from India to the Arabian Gulf and then onto the East African coast.  For three or four months a year the ancient fleet would anchor in the harbour, sheltering from the monsoon winds.  Lithe sailors would shimmy up and down the mast, but the locals never got too close  - the sailors used fish oil to season the boat wood and it exuded a terrible stench!

The Residence Maldives – Best for Folklore

The Residence Maldives sits on the unspoilt southern island of Falhumaafushi and is part of one of the largest and deepest atolls in the Maldives, Huvadhoo.   The country – which is surrounded by warm, deep waters and made up exclusively of coral atolls and small, sandy islands - has a folklore tradition that dates back more than a thousand years.  Storytelling at The Residence Maldives is a real feet in the sand family affair.

The Residence Maldives Storyteller

Born in the Maldives, Ms. Shaheena is a lively and detailed storyteller.  As she regales her stories to families, her love of the islands and her knowledge of its rich folklore traditions are apparent.  Her enthusiasm is infectious and kids can’t help but learn!  Tales include the Queen of the Triton Shell, a story about a young boy called Yazudhaan.  One day Yazudhaan – who had little money and extremely ill parents - went looking for food for his family.   Suddenly a sudden mist came out of the shell and a beautiful woman stood in front of Yazudhaan, “I am the Queen of this triton shell and I grant you three wishes”’, she said.  Stunned, Yazudhaan quickly wished for 100 gold coins and a desire to find hidden treasure on a nearby island so he could help all those in need.   His final wish was to marry the Queen of the triton shell so she would be freed and spell would be broken.  His wishes were granted and the two lived happily ever after.
